Another post to cap off this space. Since the last show I've been figuring out my moving and job situations in New York. See the links below to listen to most of the last episode (missed some at the tail end). Some call ins from friends and shout outs to associates sprinkled throughout.

I'm still in Boston once or twice a month alongside Ryan Durkin at Zuzu for Solid some Fridays. I'll also be DJing alongside Big Digits, Juiceboxx and friends at Goodlife this coming Sunday (fb link here).

I wanna thank everyone who's been involved with the show, either listening, calling, cohosting, subbing, or even just reading this blog thanks a bunch. Also a very special thanks to the WZBC eboard, past and present, Judy Schwartz long time zbc faculty advisor, Doug and Paul of Pinwheels of your mind and Jet from Stare Into the Lake Astonished the two shows that preceded me all these years.

A big thanks also to all those who have inspired my DJ career outside the station. I've always been a big fan of what a lot of people in town do and the Ghostdad brand certainly wouldn't be the same without places like the Milky Way and Zuzu, as well as staples like Beat Research at Enormous Room (big ups Wayne and Flack) and everyone who puts in time making the Good Life an interesting venue for music. Big thanks to everone I've DJed alongside over the years I hope to keep linking with you!

I'll be teaching some aftershool classes in New York similar to the work I did at the ICA for those familair. I'll also be throwing my creative energy into more Fully Fitted activity. Be sure to watch that space to pick up where this blog leaves off. Been working on some secret sauce in the background with Devlin and Alexchange and all will be revelaed in due time...

On Moving

Sorry for being out of touch through the usual holiday gap and beyond. There have been lots of changes for me personally in the last few weeks that have resulted in some serious back and forth between New York and Boston.

Details aside, my story is typical. I've long been planning a shift to New York for a variety of job and family related reasons and the iron has been getting undeniably hot over the past 6 months or so. I've loved my time here in Boston. I think I've been able to cut my teeth in radio and DJing in a way I wouldn't have been able to anywhere else.

I hate to consider New York to be across some sort of uncrossable ocean I can never return from. I'd love to stay involved in DJing here whenever possible. For now I'll be keeping my bi-monthly residency with Ryan Durkin at Zuzu every 2nd and 4th Friday. But it doesn't appear my work schedule will allow mid week commutes up to hold down a spot on WZBC. And so it's with a heavy heart that I announce the last ever Mofo Radio will take place this Wednesday Jan. 20th at 10pm on WZBC.

Join me then. May have some guests in tow. Call ins definitely a must and I'll have a large list of thank yous to be read on air and to appear on this blog after the broadcast. Till then...

Josh Dunn kicked it off with some dubbed out disco and weird vinyl digs. Come to find out in addition to the work Josh does with Wax Poetics, he's also the curator the of the well designed and content rich 100 Liousines, one of my fave blogs for some time now. Hoping to hear more from Josh in the future!

Bennet4$enate is no stranger to the airwaves, having put in appearances on WNYU's A Downtown Affair, and Broken Tape Decks on WFMU. He busted out some classic disco and dance jams along with some crazy youtube digs. Straight hits from Bangs, Tonetweakers, and PSA's on for the upcoming job fair holler! Watch the Serious Business blog for updates on that crew and Bennett's new nights blasting off at the new Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.

Sobs finished us off with hip hop set heavy on the east coast flavors. He's put out a mixtape bigging up his east coast journey which I've just linked too over at Fully Fitted. He's down in New York this week so hit up his myspace for all the dates and locals. Don't miss him while he's in the belly!

Thanks again to these guys for coming out. It was great times I'd sit in a room and wear parkas with these dudes any day! I'm gonna be gone for the holiday but back soon after so see me on the next.

Highlights from last show's playlist include Jiggaman related cuts from YN's BP3 Breaks which is floating around, and a beat from Alex Goose's Blueprint 3 Outtakes. Also another cut from the amazing Arthur Russel's Sleeping Bag Sessions comp new on Traffic. Not to mention a scratchy 45" of Hotleg's (pre 10cc) Neanderthal Man as youtubed above.

This coming week, a mind meld of mind melds. Bennet4$enate and Josh Dunn both formerly of Wax Poetics in the building, and the big Texan himself Sober repping Decade Clothing as well as Shake Em Down visual coordinator (his latest offering aint half bad).

Evaready and Beat Perv on the airwaves

Two weeks ago was a doozy. Both Evaready and Beat Perv live DJing on the air. Gems dropping all over the place. Took me a while to get this up here as per usual. Forgive the dropouts/changes in audio levels form the top we were battling some bad cables starting out. Playlist is also gonna have to wait it's lost in Serato somewhere!

New York's golden Cumbia boys, and the team behind the Que Bajo parties in Brooklyn, Uproot Andy and Geko Jones are on tour as we speak! Mostly hitting up the south and west coasts, including a stop in the deep south. Grab their free remix of Manuelita to see what you might be in for if you catch one of these guys live. Highly recommended! Full tour dates are posted at Remezcla, but I have it on good authority that Uproot Andy is headed back from Argentina and straight over to the ICA for their next Experiment party! Latin/German beats should be interesting.

And homeboy Sammy Bananas remix of Lady Gaga blazing it up over on the Hype Machine. Too explicit for airplay but it's great to see this once DIY remixer and DJ turned small label sensation get some mainstream love and grander internet recognition. Go get em Sammy! Note: after I reading the wikipedia on Lady Gaga I think I get it now.

If you tuned in tonight, you didn't hear me. Kern's now holds down the NCP2 slot every other Wednesday. Put the word out on the air last week but am late to the blog on it so sorry for if the switch is seems sudden. My reasons for reducing the number of radio shows in the month are many and include but are not limited to the amount of live DJing I've been doing, partially for fun and partially to pay the bills. I've also got some other projects bubbling in the ways of original music and mixes that may come to fruition in the near future. In the meantime I'll be with you every other week and watch Fully Fitted for everything else!

I find myself asking. Fall weather is already here but the last few (and only) weeks of summer heat were packed with some beach and travel time so I'm thankful for that. Sorry to have missed you though! Still since the last post there are two programs playlisted you could have been sleeplessly mulling over.

This Bullion Dilla v. Pet Sounds mash/mix/what have you has made plenty of blog rounds but it's good beats so I wanna offer it here for anyone who missed out. We heard Dilla beats meeting a cover of "God Only Knows" in one of those programs. You can grab the whole thing here while it lasts! Or a quick google search should turn up an active link.

This Hieroglyphic Being guy is kind of blowing my mind lately as well. His tunes all sound like jacking house made with only the general midi sound set played through a practice amp, and I'm way into it. Check the video above to get more in depth. Related videos reveal how he may actually be carrying on a longer lineage of afro jacking space house known only to those still riding the cosmic pathways between Detroit and Chicago. The track we heard "The Future Shock," is featured on the Dope Jams 3 Year Anniversary EP, limited to 100 copies only!

Okay theres are my lazy internet links for the last few weeks. Quick thanks to everyone who hosted me these past few while I was out of town, from my family and girlfriend's houses, to the couple of nights I played in New York and Philly that I somehow avoided blogging, good times had all around. New Beginning

I've been having a blast these last few weeks. Playing all kinds of weird 80's vinyl digs like this Bucks Fizz 12" (inspiring video above). See the playlists for more similar and new stuff. Dug up a lot of my own records but I wasn't without a little help from my friends:

Thanks Giessel for passing along that Eyes Of A Stranger (WrongSpeed edit). Been Stuck in my head all week. We also heard Flack's most recent offerings to the Modyfier blog and a Micheal Jackson remix from Kiddid. Solid stuff.

Some other new suff we heard that may have sounded like old stuff include new singles from Coralcola and Teengirl Fantasty, two artists that in my mind will cosmically connect in the future now that I've played them back to back on my radio show.

But you don't have to take my word for it! You can always hit up the ZBC archives to listen to the past two week's programs. Listen to both before I'm on the air tonight because they get overwritten by the hour. And see you tonight at 10 for more Mofo Radio.

Whiskey Barons Live!

Dudes came through the studio last week to take secret sips and play hot jams. If you missed it check out the full audio below. To reiterate some points, Whiskey Barons are part of FLAVORHEARD and have a record for sale at TURNTABLE LAB (soon to be more locations). They laid down plenty of funky soul disco boogie and reggae grooves along with some exclusive originals you wont hear anywhere else! Ben also arranged a few tunes for the reggae two shot over at Fully Fitted (complete with links to his rocksteady mix check it on out).

Drinking with the Whiskey Barons tonight!

Excited to chill out tonight on the air with Ben and Sam of the Flavorheard crew and get a special set of musics behind the inspiration of their Whiskey Barons project (now avail at TTlab).

Last week's playlist featured some of their tunes, along with a bunch of vinyl from a vinyl yard sale in JP and that new Holy Ghost song with the video that rips off the New Order video (awesome stuff). Also some MJ tributes with another U-tern demo edit and also some material from Craig Smith's 6th Borough Project.

The Dr. is in?

Sadly, I don't own any Patrick Gleeson LP's (at least I don't think I do), but seeing his cameo on this Pleasure album we've been listening to the last few weeks reminded me how deep this dude's production credits go, from collaborating with Herbie Hancock, to engineering Devo albums! Kind of a surprising cameo, his intro to this Pleasure album reminds me to keep an ear out for some great synth sounds throughout. Granted my vinyl copy of this record is terrible. I tried to find something online but to no avail so here's my ripped and heavily sound soaped copy to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

Summer dubs

Summertime has rolled into WZBC and Mofo is plugging along in it's Wednesday spot. Last week's program was chock full of vinyl B-side dubs as well as a few dubs from compilations past. I feel like there's a lot of attention being paid to the art of the "dub" lately. Perhaps gives the Petite Feet dance dub nice and timely release, check it out at Fully Fitted!

I was originally going to round up some tracks from this Dubstars compilation for a Reggae Two Shot, but it appears the iTunes database has messed up all the id3 tags (boo). I'm piecing it back together and I may still insert some in the Fully Fitted reggae stream, but for now I'll share a disco morsal with this take on a Will Powers classic:

On the air tonight, Glowing next week

Coupla links before the show tonight. I'll be on the air at ten but will taking next week off to join fellow JP dudes for a future disco night at the Midway called The Glow. Alfredo from Manifest Destitute will be one of those dudes and a big shout out to his blog for the great tunes and vids lately. Hate to miss the show but psyched to be at the night I've sadly always missed! Looking for ways to perhaps live internet broadcast (or even video cast) in the absence, I'll see if I can work it out!

Speaking of great tunes I've been loving Prince Klassen's edit of London Girl. Lots of tasteful EQing and slow burning. He mentioned it wasn't getting much love so I wanted to link to it here seeing I've played it on the show and probably the last three times I've played out.

Stay up to date on your Reggae Two Shots at Fully Fitted, and on the subject of reggae big shouts to Amphibious and his latest offering in the Flavorheard Radio series. New Disco roundup

Been playing plenty of funky chunes from today times that are made to sound like they were made in yesteryear, and oh how I love them in their deceptive practice! The amazing video above comes from DC's Beautiful Swimmers and we heard some tracks from their 12" out on the Future Times imprint. Hit up the label page for lots of good tracks and mixes, including a mix from the Beautiful Swimmers themselves. I'm really feeling these guys groove heavy handed on an 80's kinda protopopfunk thing.

Trus'me has been getting some buzz for a minute but I finally got my hands on their Still No Check ep. Building some tunes out of what sound like lifted disco snippets and fuzzy AM radio sounds these guys also manage to get deep with it with lengthy slow burning house beats. Here's a track from them that fits the earlier description from another release.

Not to mention the slew of Rub-N-Tug edits (and deep side projects), and some In Flagranti new stuff (find the hidden track in this post) there are plenty of these edit meets remix meets original tracks floating around and I'm loving every minute of it. These projects seem to have an appreciation for an old school style of production where every mix and dub was just as important as the original song. Perhaps words like "sampling" and "remix" didn't exist back then it was all just part of how things were done. I can't claim to know exactly how it went down but I'm definitely feeling this hark to disco past with some nice new elements that keep it fresh. Right on dudes.

Speaking of all this new/old/disco/house/dance stuff what better way to dig deep then to see the dudes that may have started it all. Metro Area play Goodlife this Saturday

Emotional disco rants aside, I'll be taking this week off from the show as well. Scheduling hasn't been in my favor lately and I've got to run to New Jersey for a funeral. Not the best of circumstances but a good time to reflect and catch up with family etc. I'll be back on air next week. See yall then!

big weekend

Big weekend in JP and greater Boston area. Big Digits are playing at Spontaneous Celebrations for the first time in a long time. Over in Cambridge the Megapolis festival is in full swing the whole weekend though with a slew of Z sponsored events. The weather is so great it's worth multiple bike rides in either direction to catch all the action. More later, for now enjoy the weekend!

Tons of stuff coming up and coming out but I'm already ahead of myself. As promised here's a few tid bits from the last few weeks:

A Silent Flute has been linked to the Fully Fitted page for a minute now. I originally knew it as a blog of crazy obscure videos and amazing gems raked from the depths of youtube, but with his entry into the Live At Home archive I found it also a destination of some solid mixtapes. All sorts synthed out 80's, crazy disco, and movie score interludes make these mixes equally as gem worthy as ASF's youtube finds. We heard a the a little bit of his most recent mix Vector Dance in the program two weeks ago.

On to Ryan Durkin, doing big things and blowing up the indie hip hop mixtape circuit with the lead cut on Outasight's From There To Here (an album prequal). We heard "People, Places, Things" in the program. Hit up Outasight's myspace to download the entire mix. You might remember Durknasty from his appearance on Mofo way back when. Or from various mentions on this blog and DJ gigs we play together. Find us at Joseph's Pizza late night if nowhere else!

And there's a whole mess or records I've been meaning to rip and share but where's the time really!? Lately I've been indulging hard in everyone else on the internet's efforts. Last week was Tricky.

Mofo's been going strong. Check the playlists from two week's ago and last week. Had a bunch of what you might call "trip hop" records in hand last week having rushed to the studio after opening for Tricky. As in THE Tricky yah no joke! It was a fun time. Got to play some weird stuff as people were arriving. Busted out all the 90's Ninjatune, Mowax and Warp I had. I'm maybe a half a generation too late on the original Tricky but I figured that'd be a good fit. Played some new beats as well and stayed for the first few Tricky songs which were intense. Full band and massive shoegazery synth and guitar lines. I guess his new album is getting attention but I bet he still makes a fair amount of bank off of Overcome (video above).

Aaaaanway, a quick re-holler at the Reggae Two Shots going up at Fully Fitted (a particularly duby edition this week). And I've also been really digging on some DJ "edits" floating around on the internet these days including Eli's Vitamin C re-edit and U-Tern's Pretty Young Thing demo edit. Plenty funky all around.

Expect some more vinyl tune tryouts and latest from the webs again this evening. Brand new stuff from Ryan Durkin and A Silent Flute I'd like to blog in more detail on the follow up entry. For now you'll have to tune in tonight to get my take on it. See you then!

Busy weeks are getting the better of me yet again. Special thanks to LoudSound for filling in for me last week and this coming week as I run around between Jersey trips, DJ gigs, and NY home studios.

Wanted to throw some links at you from two weeks ago's playlist. First is this new Bottin video featuring a track from his new EP. I've been playing a ton of stuff from the Italians Do It Better catalog on the show lately.

We also heard a new discoish remix of Sneaky Sound System in Hugg's set a few weeks ago which prompted me to do more research on this guy Breakbot. Found this Metronomy remix that's real slow and funky. Love these changes.

Some good disco/boogie blogs (and dudes)

I wanted to do a bigger write up of some of my favorite disco blogs over the holiday, but the year got away from me, so I'll throw quick mention at the following resources to give some credit where credit is due. We hear the occasional cut from these places in the show, so grab them from the source if you're download savvy!

Beat Electric is a San Francisco crew that posts plenty of fresh rips and makes me want to get high(er) fi with my ripping set up, not to mention mixing setup. Lots of tracks, detailed descriptions, and dudes also play locally in San Fran so check em out!

Pat Les Stache holds down American Athlete. Chock full of good rips, Seattle based Pat also curates a 12" series of rereleased rarities on Phonica Records.

I've come across a couple Brazilian blogs into 70's and 80's cuts, Flash In Flash being one of them with entire album/12 inch rips of varying quality. Worth a look!

The Trance deserves a mention. Tons of material but sadly a good rip is rare. Still a good spot to pick up stuff now and again though.

And if it's more deep disco cuts you're after, you CAN NOT miss the show this week. Had a quick call in confirmation during last week's show from the Boston legend himself, DJ Nitetrain, who will be in the studio along with Jesse Hubbell and Area D of the infamous Musk dance parties at The Midway. Musk is sadly coming to a close, and for their final night they'll be hosting Nitetrain along with Magic People and Plunge Into Death. MUSK Boston’s weekly super freakly dance party is coming to an end with one final monster show on January 28. MUSK was birthed in the summer of 2005 by Area D, David Daniel Geissler as a night dedicated to performance and social dance. Wednesday nights @ The Midway Café soon became platform and dance floor for a wild spectrum of bands, performers and dj’s. MUSK culled talent from fertile JP as well a hosting touring bands from the US and abroad. Electro, punk, experimental, rock, noise, roots, rap if it has a beat to move you it plays MUSK. MUSK showed a flair for the theatrical and soon became home to showgirls and space opera. The night’s heart beat with some of the best DJs in Boston such as Knife, Colboure, Ghostdad, Mark E. Moon, Casey and D’Hanna. MUSK has also sought to experiment with the role of DJ and integrate the DJ into live performance. The MUSK-spun Area D Initiative (playing last MUSK 1/28) crossbreeds live vocals, spoken and
sung with dance moves into a live turntable set. Shows like Varietae incorporate a live band, characters and narrative into the dance party. MUSK loves to present the obscure like DJ Dirty Magg who exclusively plays cassettes or the elusive DJ Nitetrain. Spinning in Boston’s gay clubs since the 80’s, DJ Nitetrain plays long dead disco and lost club classics and is something of a lost club classic himself. (spinning at last MUSK 1/28).

But why must the music end? “Booking, promoting, producing, DJing and being the soundguy for weekly event consumes much energy, you hardly get a chance to catch your breath and there is another show going up. I’ve lately been drawn to create more events outside the parameters of a bar and I want to concentrate my booking efforts on the upcoming Tour de Plunge bike tour of Europe.”

Been sleeping on the blog. Had some fun radio shows and local gigs, then traveled down to Jersey for the holiday. Chilling there now but I wanted to throw in a few links from the last playlist.

First a shout out to Australian female DJ team Hoops. Caught a link to their site in Devlin and Darko's Australia report. We heard they're Wrong Number 2 mix in the show and it's easy to see why they're running things down under. Visit wearthemhoops.com and click the big image to download it fer yerself!

We also heard music from the Gangbe Brass Band. Dudes are from Benin and are described as a mix of West African and colonial brass music. Killer full sound with some jazz funk fusion as well. Here's the tune I found that made me want more of their stuff (super low bit rate sorry):

This little gem comes straight out of last week's playlist. I admit I helped a little on the production of this chune, with most production credit due to Chris Devlin and Pase Rock, but it's really the girls that make this one a hit. Hailing from Australia, King Sister are part of a group of young talents that record for the Heaps Decent imprint. Pase and Chris spent a little time with the gals on their last trip down under and recorded some vocals in need hot beats and the result is this smash single "Koori Girls." I encourage you to buy this from their iTunes store (link above, soon to be on Beatport/ttl/juno) as half the funds go to the King Sisters themselves, and the other half to a group providing this great opportunity for young folks. We’ve been working with volunteers in Australia to provide an outlet / resource / music education center for underpriveledged and indiginous youth in Australia. Between offering a space for kids to come and learn dj’ing and production technics, Heaps Decent has been linking them up with established artists for workshops, recording and the possibility of an international release- such as this track.

“Koori Girls” features the 16 and 17 year old King Sisters (Heather and Janey), produced by Spank Rock’s Chris Devlin (aka Chris Rockswell) and featuring vocals from Pase Rock. The King Sisters are two of the girls who came in to Heaps Decent studio for workshops, and “Koori” is another term for indigenous or aboriginal, with more of a spiritual identification. 100% of the proceeds from these releases go directly back into the Heaps Decent initiative - look out for upcoming collaborations from M.I.A., Radioclit, Diplo and more.

In addition to this and the previous Heaps Decent release, “Smash A Kangaroo” (produced by Diplo), Australia’s Parklife Festival is also donating a portion of ticket sales to Heaps Decent.

He's definitely got progressive ideas on intellectual property (generally giving music away vs. selling it), but perhaps that comes with the booty turf? For a music that's generally spread through bootleg and online mixtapes and samples anything and everything, suppose it's appropriate for it's newcomers to be just as willing to sayyy, give out their phone number on the air and hook up tracks on request. No kidding!

Bass Invaders Jam The Box on VE Radio

I got linked up with Stef at Vinyl Exchange through my main man Beat Perv, and when it came time to put together an all vinyl mixtape for Vinyl Exchange Radio, given the weight of the other mixes in the series, I knew I would need reinforcements. Nick and I have been meaning to lay down a mix featuring the classic tracks we try and interject into our monthly night Bass Invaders and this turned out to be the perfect opportunity given most of these classics come in the form of wax. Nick's been collecting this kind of stuff a bit longer then I and his crates surely show it as a lot of these gems belong to him. They killed it on the out of towner tip, playing classic party rockers and a suprising amount of their own edits that worked the floor. They even busted out a quick New Orleans Bounce set, really catchy stuff. I'm still soaking up sun out of town this week and with no program upcoming I had to at least break off a piece to the blog readers. Quick reminder that the latest mix is over at Fully Fitted featuring some sounds from the radio and more. If you're already up on it like you should be, I thought I'd provide some links to other radio and blog rockers who's selections I'm really feeling lately. We've heard some of the cuts from all these guys posts on the air at some point:

I don't know much about Helsinki's DJ Anonymous other than he's a record ripping monster, and holds down a radio show in Finland every Saturday night. Between the top quality old vinyl rips, remixes, and nice mixes, he also keeps us up to date on what's going down in Helsinki which is always a good look.

I've been a Matthew Africa fan ever since picking up his Soul Boulders mixtape at my local street wear store that also sells yoo-hoo in the can. Come to find out he holds down a show on KALX in San Fran and has an active blog to boot! You'll find some quality rips, mixes, and great writing on West Coast hip hop history.

Canada's U-Tern holds down his slice of the pie over at Brooklyn Radio with the program One Day Later. His latest edition features throwback boogie producer Dam-Funk who has new material coming out on Stones Throw that James Pants hipped us to a few weeks back. And this OMG collection of live hip hop tapes he reposted makes those two posts in a row absolutely crucial.

One last holler at V101.5 FM down here in the Jacksonville area for providing the greatest vacation soundtrack possible. Smooth RnB and jammin old school all day! A pretty chill playlist for last week's program, getting over whatever bug got into to me. Heard a bunch of new CD's featuring old music, including a rerelease of Roy Ayers Ubiquity Vibrations (amazing), a track from Funky Nassau - The Compass Point Story 1980-1986 (recently reviewed for The Fader by Wayne), and another tune from The Master of Masterpiece 2, featuring music produced by disco production genious Patrick Adams.

I'm off this week for a little summer vacay which means no Mofo Radio this week or next. I encourage you to check out the mix I put together for Chris Devlin and the dudes over at Fully Fitted (should be up soon). You'll recognize a lot of the tunes from recent programs mashed together live in one take. He's hosting a bunch of great DJ's "Live At Home" mixes including Mike2600, 7L, Beyonder, Knife, Prince Klassen, the list goes on and I'm honored to be on it!

Lately I've been DJing like crazy. Like anywhere and everwhere. In wanting to keep some kind of record of all these goings on I'm gonna shout them out here. I try to keep the radio show somewhat separate but I've been playing with a lot of the same names that have appeared on the show so if you missed out on any of these, here's the long short of em, starting wiiiith:

April 13th - Do It Again at Zuzu w/ Chris Devlin - was kind of an industry hangout with lots of other DJ friends who came to hang out. Lots of disco, freestyle, some house, breakfast.

April 15th - Scissor Test w/ Beat Perv - bus to New Hampshire was pimped out with leather seats. Patrick's old school Chicago game was on point. Weird noise music also ensued.

April 17th - fundraiser at the Other Side - I won the skydiving lessons give away but gave it back cuz that looked mad sketch being the DJ and all, walked off with a t-shirt from Bodega instead.

April 19th - Global Guts afterparty at Jacob's - crazy 6 hour set, ended up playing non stop till 6 am and I think people actually liked it.

April 22nd - Work at E-Room w/ Mayhem - post Quicksilver screening (classic) and fun with cougar sound effects. Still hoping this becomes a monthly!

April 24th - Bass Invaders at the Milky Way with Gregzinho - completing the circle from the previous post, Greg came and rocked the latest Rio fire.

April 25th - Solid at Zuzu w/ Die Young - did house and electro 3's with Jamie. Played This Is Acid and the people went nuts?

April 27th - FALAFELCon at Zuzu w/ Lone Wolf - went reggaeton vs. dancehall one for one with Kevin, then freestyle one for one, and finished off with classic ladies, with no recovering from Kev dropping Whitney.

Aprill 30th - Dirty Disco Musk at the Midway w/ Nitetrain - disco and house vinyl all night. Nitetrain didn't miss a beat and even hit us with some new shit. ps. go Newcastle.

May 3rd - afterparty in Somerville - wzbc's Sarah Joy and Will Lynch upstairs and me downstairs, tried to switch it up just in time for the cops to get there.

That brings us up to date. More this weekend with the second installment of Do It Again, this time with Frank White doing possibly an all '45 set. Makes me want to do all 12"s just to compensate. It also looks like I'm doing something last minute at the Milky Way for a show that fell through. So far Ben from Flavorheard on board, hoping for Sam too, haven't played with those guys in a minute. Just like the old days at NU fellas?

Gregzinho reps Rio!

A few weeks ago Greg Scruggs aka Grezinho joined us on air and the audio from that show is finally posted below! The first hour is me playing some random vinyl and mpthrees while Greg sent some important emails. He's clearly a busy man, having just helped release the Funkeiros E Progresso (Funkeiros and Progess) EP and Pancadao Do Morro (big hits from the hillside) compilation on the Philly based Flamin' Hotz label. In the last two hours of the program Greg fills us in on Funk Carioca, from classics to current, as well as the good, bad, and ugly side of how this music is distributed outside the favela. You can find Greg's own writings at Beat Diaspora (here's his bit on the comp, be sure to buy this "fair trade funk!!"), and you can check out the non profit he's associated with in Rio at 2bros.org. He's pictured above rocking the most recent Bass Invaders, aptly renamed Invasores Do Baixo for yet another Brazilian infused dance party. Was a great time!

There will be no Mofo Radio tomorrow night. My college career is coming to a close, and in fact comes to it's pinnacle at NU's Senior Music Tech recital tomorrow night. I also wanted to holler out a few live (one Z related) appearance in the next few days. In addition to the usual BASS INVADERS monthly on Thursday (we got a myspace now cuz we cool like dat), Doug of Pinwheels of Your Mind and I will be hosting a very special "Z Night" at the Channel Cafe in Fort Point this Friday. In last week's playlist, you might remember this tune as the fun freestyle ending to the hip house mix I did as part dos of the Summer Mix Series. Just scrambled across this video and it's dope. On top of the Jellybean production, you've got old school bmx bikes (ahem), slick poplock moves, keytars, what more could you want!

Bassline heat from DJ C and the Mashit blog in last week's show as well. I've been purposefully slow on checking out this whole UK bassline sensation, but the added R. Kelly vocal in C's blend brings that much more accesability to the whole thang. The Donna Summer track on that page is also worth a look. Gotta throw credit to Rupture's blog as well for some of the Cumbia mpfrees sprinkled in recent programs as well.

Spring Break Disco

I'm on spring break seeing my peoples in NY/NJ this week. Meant to get a post in earlier in the week so apologies if you tuned in to nothing Wed night (not sure if there was a sub in there). In the meantime, here's an update on some disco we heard in the last program.

This Hi Tension track in the playlist comes from this killer compilation of UK disco. Kind of a random release (could only find an import copy online) it's got some rare and funky stuff on it.

Kind of in the same vein, I ran into these Loft Classics compilations while shopping at the lab in New York. Featuring tracks made famous by David Mancuso's earlier Loft Parties, they present another opportunity to pick up some rare disco/funk/fusion digs in digital format. I'd be lying if I said we won't be hearing a lot of these tracks on the air in coming weeks. For now, check this extended tribute to NYC spring break (woo)!

Big ups to the Weekly Dig for the quick feature last week. By "on location" they're referring to the (President's Day) Sunday before at Zuzu. Got a chance to play some party jams, classics, new stuff and weird shit alongside surprise guest Chris Devlin who held down the disco and club jams. I happened to be glaring at my Serato (erhmm, I mean Ms. Pinky) playlist when they quizzed me so all these are in mpthree format. Electro synth hype jams from Love Emitting Diode in last week's playlist. This dude is local and just getting started, but from the sound of his portfolio thus far I think we'll be hearing big things from homeboy in the future. Fits nicely with those 80's synth washes for your V-Day Week (check the audio from last week's post!)

Valentines day always makes me think of drippy synth pop 80's record Molly Ringwald movies. It just so happens I have a mountain of those 12's hanging out in the archives, many of which we've heard (perhaps painfully and at length) on the air before. At the end of the day though, some of these fat baselines and synth sequencers matched with huge drum kits can't be denied. Better in 08!

Sorely out of touch over the holiday. I've been getting caught up on some freelance work while at my mom and dad's house. Also rewatching The Wire on their fancy cable. Totally worth it. Finally got away from the TV and computer screen to see friends in NY this past Sat. Big ups to Uproot Andy (pictured above) who put down an awesome set of Balkan material, also bringing in Brazilian and African beats (no lie). Check him out as often as possible at the Mehanata Bulgarian Bar on the lower east side where I think he's a regular (Eugene Hutz also in the lineup). As for end of the year wrap ups, I've been enjoying the mixes recommended by bros at Fully Fitted. Hit them up for the downloads.

Resolutions for 2008 include stepping up my game. I'd like to apply said resolution to pretty much everything I'm doing. Expect new things from the solo and live career (not what this blog is about) and new and even better things from the radio show (what it's about). More guests, more vinyl, more mptrees, all providing more material for this here web page. For now, having stepped up my digital camera game, this is a good chance for me to reup on record covers really doing it for me right now. Expect some choice cuts in 08! See you next Wednesday.

More love for African around the net as of late which reminded me to dig up some mp3's from Kenya I've been meaning to sift through. I owe most of them to a friend of mind who let me burn 2 data cd's worth of stuff she brought back. A lot of it is way poppy but some of the beats really bang. From what I can tell the above "Wariah" pokes some fun at Muslim/Christian conflicts. Also makes good use of the Mas Que Nada melody which has me hooked. I'd post up my file but it's pretty poor quality (most likely ripped from the above source). Here are a few other tracks we heard. Mwafalanguzi we've heard on the show a bunch, and some Kenyan reggaeton new to the air. Not as much info on these, can anyone help ID?

Killing it in the Baltimore Club scene, on tour around the US with M.I.A., turning 17 next week, Rye Rye is straight fire lately. We've been listening to tracks she's done with Blaqstarr and Diplo in addition to various remixes on the program for a minute now, and the Shake It To The Ground video (above) just dropped, so what better time to catch her for a quick spot on the air? Balkan Reggaeton

Now that I've gotten the buzzword title out of the way, I'll reveal my sources on a few of the Balkan inspired jams I've picked up lately. These tracks have mixed in surprisingly well on air and in the club.

The first is a DJ Kozi blend with a reggaeton beat over it. I'm more partial to the Trubaci (brass) stuff for some reason cuz it's crazy hype. This and other remixes available at thebestyudjs.de.vu.

And here's a house edit of a song by the Mahala Rai Band. The original bumps on it's own, but the beat here gives it just a bit more backbone for the dance floor. You would have heard both on the program these last couple weeks though. You can find it on a CD called Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers out on the Basement Jaxx label.

Mahalageasca Felix B Jazzhouse Dub

Cambridge got a taste of a few Balkan jams as well when Honk Fest (pic above) went down a few weeks ago. It was a crazy time with lots of great bands playing all sorts of Klezmer, hip-hop, New Orleans, and even Afrobeat jams! The What Cheer? Brigade particularly brought the house down and journeyed only as far as from Providence! Hopefully this means they'll be back again real soon. Lord knows it's a shorter trip then their previous excursions to lands as far as Serbia for the Festival of Trumpeters at Guca. Guca is known as about the largest, loudest, and drunkenest brass band gathering in the world and from the movie trailers alone it seems to live up to the hype. This doc due out on DVD here hopefully soon:

sweeping across the Sahara

Music on Sublime Frequencies in last week's show. In particular from Group Inerane, the "now sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert." They developed this political brand electric guitar music in Libyan Refugee camps. It's the electric guitars matched with traditional rhythms that take this to the next level for me. We're pretty head over heals for it all over the station as well as I think this has been getting a lot of spins! Check out this video to see the real deal. Sadly the DVD is sold out.

We'll inevedibally hear more from that in tomorrow's show. More Balkan stuff as well (mostly remixed) as I delve further into my guilty pleasure of brass bands and making this completely a world music show. Balkan reggaeton mixes worked suprisingly well in the club the other night though...

And speaking of, thanks to everyone who came out to the Milky Way last Thurs. Another jump off this Thursday as Chrish Devlin and co Shake em Down. Devlin on the mix is sure to be correct. Big apologies on the unannounced skip of last week's show. The NU block party (and oops I forgot I was DJing the afterparty) kept me last week. If you stopped by good stuff, a few snaps here! Since I have no last week to blah about I'll use this as an opportunity to talk about the Ghostdad live scene which is about to get larger. I'm hosting one of FOUR (count em) new monthly DJ nights at the Milky Way in JP. Friend of the program Nick Yoder (WMFO) will be joining me at the decks for Bass Invaders. Back to my roots and to where my radio life began for WRBB's annual fall block party this Wednesday evening. Some good hip hop and indie rock on the bill so come through cuz it's a free outdoor show. Although technically only for Northeastern students, I don't think there's going to be anyone there to tell you otherwise so stop by if you're in the back bay area. I'll be spinning between sets but friend of the program Who Knows is going to be on the mic this time so I'm psyched to check him out!

Last week's program featured music from a Bitch Ass Darius mixtape thankfully shared by Tudo Mundo. Dude is totally holding it down for Databass with some seriously next level bass mastery.

A bunch of other records in that playlist too. Mooving week gave me a chance to dig up some replays. It also reminded me how I never wanted to own as many records as I do in my current location because moving them was a complete bitch. Finally done shifting for now. I'm in total moving mayhem but I wanted to dish this out before my computer is completely packed for my move up the street into Jamaica Plain. Another twenty minute chunk, but perhaps a departure from previous segments of the mix series, this crossfaderless mix is lifted right out of the program from two weeks ago (plus a few drops and bonus beats). It's more about matching pitches then beats, though the bpm chaos adds nicely to the August daze I'm feeling right now. To make up for my absence last week, check out these summer sounds to keep you going in (what should be) the August heat. We're having kind of a cold spell up here, long sleeves and the like, but all the more reason to get into some sounds from further south and imagine better weather.Been meaning to check out more soca for a while and the G13 dudes have been bringing it stateside for a minute now. This being their third edition of Caribbean Carnival tunes, the other two are also available for purchase or download. Check out volumes ONE and TWO!

We've heard from Singh before on the Bhangra tip, now he's taking on Go-Go. I've been looking for a solid wrangling of Go-Go beats in mixtape form as well so this is a total bonus and some laid back beats for your end of summer soundtrack. His Good to Go-Go mix is a promo for the above night where it seems that DC sound made it's way down to hotlanta for a bit.

And join me tomorrow night for more sound. We might listen to some of the above, some new 12's, some new philly party tunes, and some UK baseline rhythms. Till tomorrow!

WZBC Desi in the Boston Globe!

Props to WZBC's very own Komal Trivedi on her feature in the Boston Globe (with a nice audio piece on the page as well). If you're not an early riser, here's your reason to become one and catch her show Bricklane Beats every Thursday 7 to 9am, featuring the best in South Asian vibes both modern and classic. If that's way too early for you Bricklane Beats is also featured along with other fine public radio programing at Underheard.org.

As for Mofo Radio, check out last week'd playlist here. Whole lot of hip hop, old school, breaks, and a brief DnB breakdown in there somewhere. Tunes from the Vampisoul catalogue and Ultimate Beats and Breaks archive at the top of the show. New MIA towards the end of the show. Her new album drops Aug. 20, and while I hate hype, from the tracks I've heard it's gonna be a crazy one.

Quick mention of some new tracks from multi-instrumentalist J.D. Meachem. We heard "Long Lost," direct from his myspace in last week's show. He's got some other new tracks up there as well (most with lyrics), and looks to be performing soon in a south side near you so stay tuned for that!

Plenty of Kwaito in last week's playlist. Most of it nabbed from youtube videos. Kwaito is the current pop fair in South Africa and has some serious old school dance classic influence. Most songs feature slowed house beats as the backbone that are totally camp but I kind of dig. Some tunes are way poppy but I'm defenitly feeling the simpler tunes and remixes I've heard around town. Peep the Mjava video above, and the Missy remix below, plenty of others up as well. If you've got an hour or so this WBUR produced Kwaito doc is also worth a listen.

Hip house rarities old and new to my crates also in the playlist. I've got a hip house vocal mix in the works I've promised to put out there by week's end! Stay tuned for that!

Thanks to Certified Bananas and everyone who came out to the Milky Way this past Friday. Fun photos here. Definitely made for a great birthday! Was way surprised to have a few listeners come out of the woodwork too. Thanks for coming to say hello!

Playlist from last week here. A bunch of new (to me) cuts this week, some thanks to a massive church sale in my hometown I was able to hit up two weeks ago. Never disappoints (I'm pretty amped on the Rare Earth LP I found). More from that stack in this week's show!

We also heard some snippets from the The Bladerunner's Megamix CD featuring Boston locals 7L and the Razor. In the tradition of edit tapes (and some 12"s like the one that followed in the show) these guys break out the exacto on classic beats and new sounds too for an amazing cut and paste style ride. Looks like they're still dishing out quality remixes for the working DJ, and you can see them at Enormous Room this Friday.

Plenty of other stuff to hit up on the local calendar as well. Also on Friday Second Gallery closes with a party at Hong Kong in Harvard Sq. (DJ's Red Foxxx, Kingdom, and Lone Wolf). Saturday The Miracle Five bring you Sweat2Die at "The Palace" in Somerville. Billed at "true visual ghettotech" I'm not sure what exactly to expect but with acts like trapeze artists, sword swallowers, and bearded ladies on the bill, it may be a serious spectacle. NEXT Friday Flavordudes bring up Egg Foo Young for this month's Clap Your Hands. Next Sat the great DJ /Rupture comes back to town for Bouncement 2 with a bunch of local friends. And on Sunday (the 29th) Baltimore deep house DJ Karizma comes to Utopia at Boston Rocks. Whoa is it Summertime yet?

Back from my week off and Mofo Radio returns Wednesday, but if you're hard up I'll give you some recommended listening for the next few days. Certified Bananas teamed up with Canada's Smalltown DJ's on a supermix repping North America. Download North American Wildlife from Certified Bananas website. This mix is totally on point and may be a preview of the mayhem these guys are going to bring when they play the Milky Way this Friday in Jamaica Plain.

On that note I'll officially announce my unofficial birthday party this Friday at the Milky Way. Unofficial because it's really a Certified Bananas gig opened by yours truly. Acid Brass and then some...

Music from Acid Brass in last week's playlist, adding to pool of dope brass music I've been feeling lately. Brass bands are nerdy enough as is but covering acid house hits takes this to a new level of nerddom with some really pleasing results. This Jeremy Deller guy has got this music/art/conceptual mashup mentality right, mapping out the whole process for the gallery (pictured above). Surprised it took me so long to get down on this. Some mp3s have been graciously shared on The Stranger's music blog.

Music from Dan Deacon before that. He'll be coming to town July 12th at the Middle East (more info blogged here). Dan Deacon also dips into the music/art/performance world with several video collaborations scattered around the web. His near constant tour schedule has also resulted in some good live footage. Looks like a hell of a time!

And a little tambourine medley before that. Soul Searcher's Blow Your Whistle as sampled in the new Eve joint. Wasn't sure at first, but I slowed it down and it's all there. "A Zillion Tambourine's" from AmmonContact after that (who I seriously can't put down lately). BONUS google image search via Giessel (and Chubby Cox).

Quick nod to Beat Research last night with awesome sets from RNDM and a super special surprise set from DJ Ripley! Had no idea she was on the bill but was pleasantly surprised to hear her totally murdering it late into the evening. Going to try to have her swing by the show sometime this summer!

LA LUPE THE QUEEN OF LATIN SOUL

Caught a great doc on La Lupe (the Queen of Latin Soul) on PBS. Often overshadowed by Celia Cruz, La Lupe (the Queen of Latin Soul) is a legend of Latin music in her own right. Her too sexy performance style, love hate with Tito, dance with Santeria and unfortunate fall from the music industry make for a compelling story. I'm being careful to always use her bi-line because she apparently wouldn't appear on stage without it. We heard the audio from the video above in the show this past week. Check out the rest of the playlist here.

Music from Gaslamp Killer also in this past week's playlist. His mixes, original beats, and general blurred sonic mashery are starting to make the rounds much thanks to his employer. He also has his own site with downloads and infos over there. I'm liking what I hear so far.

Also an excerpt from MPC's Baile Dancehall Mixtape. Can't remember who pointed me to this one (think is was Mudd Up) but who knew the slower side of Baile could get along so well with dancehall/dubstep? More from MPC here.

As for my own preview, I'll be giving it you Monday when I drop the first installment of what will be a summer of (short) mixtapes! I've been back to hording vinyl again and as an exercise in my obsession with 12"s I'm gonna try and bring a series of short mixes with fresh themes over the course of the summer. Let's see how many I can get done! The first one's called "Up To The Minute."

But let's save all that for Monday. For now, take the weekend to digest the Giessel and Colbourne audio from these last two absolutely killer weeks!

As discussed Joseph Colbourne is no stranger to the airwaves. He currently holds down a weekly slot with Viva Radio online. He also put in an appearance on Galactic Fractures on wmfo not too long ago. Between his show, blog, and now monthly dance party at the Milky Way there are numerous ways to get down with this authority on italo, disco and funk.

Ben Sisto is one of the masterminds that keeps Boston happening. Formerly of Honeypump fame Ben is currently behind Cloud City and works booking and promo at The Milky Way where he was able to bring us Color. You can check his online writings at Scenefeeder and art happenings at OBFAT. Ben played us some yet to be released music from Nightfingers.

Thanks again to those guys for coming out. Looking forward to the next Color on July 6th. Speaking of dates, I'd almost forgotten I'm playing Beat Research this Monday (June 11th)! Andrew Giessel and I will be there spinning tunes, and we'll even give you a taste live on the air tomorrow night. That's right no kidding! Mofo keeps the guests coming with Giessel for a preview of Monday's Beat Research. Giessel's day gig in (ahem) neuroscience gives him some serious chops for freaking beats by night. As promised, I managed to rip the Sushi rap from the flea market tape I found. Finding some kids beat boxing and rapping on a tape is golden, but a whole room full of them in a talent show setting is extra gold. Check it out:
